Straight vs. Curved Stairlifts: Which One is Right for You?

Straight Stairlifts

Straight stairlifts are made for straight staircases – ones without turns or landings.

Some straight stairlifts have an optional folding rail, like the one in this photo. The folding rail folds out of the way to avoid being a trip hazard if the rail extends into a walkway.

Typical straight stairlift timeline:
  • Schedule an evaluation – 1-3 days
  • Receive your quote: 1-2 days after completed evaluation
  • Order your stairlift: typically arrives in 1-2 weeks
  • Schedule your stairlift assembly: typically within 2-3 days of order arrival from the manufacturer

Curved Stairlifts

Curved stairlifts are for stairs that have turns or curves, including landings.

Curved stairlifts are custom designed and built for your specific staircase. Because of this, the overall process takes longer.

Typical curved stairlift timeline:
  • Schedule an evaluation: 1-3 days
  • Receive your quote: typically around 1 week because each curved lift is a custom design
  • Order your stairlift: 4-6 weeks because curved rails are custom built for your staircase
  • Schedule your stairlift assembly: typically within 2-3 days of order arrival from the manufacturer

Are Stairlifts Safe?

Yes, they come with safety features like seatbelts, sensors, and emergency stop buttons.

Do Stairlifts Cause Damage to Staircases?

Stairlifts attach to the steps themselves, not the wall. They attach using screws that will leave a small hole if the lift is removed later. For wooden stairs, these holes can easily be repaired with wood putty.

For carpeted stairs, after fluffing the carpet, no holes should be visible.

How Much Does a Stairlft Cost?

Costs vary based on the type of staircase, model, and features. Straight stairlifts are generally more affordable than curved stairlifts because they require less customization. For more a deeper look at stairlift cost, check out our blog article: How much do stairlifts cost? – COR Freedom Blog

Are Stairlifts Covered by Insurance?

It’s best to check with your insurance provider to know what they will cover. At the very least, a prescription from your doctor stating the stairlift is medically necessary will allow your Michigan stairlift dealer to waive the sales tax.

How Long Does it Take to Assemble a Stairlift?

Installation time varies, but most straight stairlifts can be installed in a few hours. Curved stairlifts can can 1-2 days, depending on complexity.

A curved stairlift will take 4-6 weeks to manufacture from the time you order one. This is because a curved stairlift is custom-built for your unique staircase.
