Does a Stairlift Work During a Power Outage?

A Handicare stairlift

For many people, stairlifts are a lifeline—giving them access to areas of their home they wouldn’t normally be able to reach. But what happens if the power goes out? Are they stranded?

How Stairlifts Are Powered

In order to answer the question of what happens if the power goes out, it’s important to understand how most stairlifts work. Although a stairlift plugs into a standard 110V outlet, that outlet isn’t what directly powers the motor. Instead, most stairlifts run on rechargeable batteries housed in the chair unit. These batteries provide the power needed to move the stairlift up and down the rail.

How Do the Batteries Recharge?

Charging points along the rail keep the batteries charging all the time. Because of this design, a stairlift can continue to operate for multiple trips even if the home loses power.

How Many Trips Can a Stairlift Make in a Power Outage?

Most stairlifts can complete 10 OR more trips before the batteries run out. In many cases, that’s plenty of time for the power to be restored without any interruption to your stairlift’s use.
