Staircases come in all shapes and sizes, and you might wonder if a stairlift can be used on your staircase. In most cases, where there’s a will, there’s a way. Most stairs can be fitted with one of two types of stairlifts – straight rail or curved rail.
Straight Rail Stairlifts
Straight rail stairlifts rely on one straight rail to move the chair between levels. These stairlifts are fairly universal and can often be removed and re-used if needed. Straight rails are also typically the least expensive of the two options.
Sometimes more than one straight rail is used on a staircase where there are landings between floors. This configuration only works if the user is able to safely transfer from one seat to another.
Curved Rail Stairlifts
Curved rail stairlifts have one or more curves to help move the chair along more complicated staircases. This type of stairlift often makes it possible for people to navigate curved staircases or staircases with landings midway.
Curved rail stairlifts are always custom-built for a particular staircase.
